The saree is indeed a traditional attire for all Indian women and plays a crucial part in our culture. This 6-9 yard fabric is adored by all women as it symbolizes grace and feminism and makes her feel elegant and strong.

Made from a range of fabrics such as cotton, silk, jacquard, and georgette, other fabrics such as velvet and art silk has also been used of late. The saree is a hit for any function be it weddings, parties, festivals, or even just daily wear or office wear, it is an all-weather option that you cannot go wrong with.

Even though the garment is a loved classic, most women are reluctant to wear it and only pull it out of the wardrobe when there is a wedding or special function because the draping methods can sometimes be a problem if you are not used to doing it often.

This is no longer a problem as we will show you how to drape the saree and all the trendy styles of draping it. Saree draping can largely be categorized into two groups, traditional and modern.

Let us start by keeping at hand all the items you will need before draping the saree, these are
     petticoat (same colour as saree)
     blouse
     safety pins
     broach (optional)
Shoes (wearing your shoes first helps make judgement of how high or low to wear the saree and petticoat)

TRADITIONAL STYLES
These are older styles that in most cases differ according to regions and cultures.

Gujarati style
This style of saree draping is exclusively worn in the state of Gujarat. This style differs greatly in the fact that the pallu is at the front not back.
Step 1: Take one end of the saree and tuck it on the right side, then take the loose fabric to the back and tuck it in completely.

Step 2: On the left side tuck in the fabric and bring remaining fabric to the front.

Step 3: From the pallu, make pleats and note that the pleats will be from back to front (front pallu is the main characteristic of this style) After making pleats, affix them to the blouse with safety pins.

Step 4: Pull the tuck out and proceed to make box pleats, these pleats need to be securely safety pinned and then tucked in at the waist.
Step 5: Attention can now be paid to the pallu, take a pleat and drape it across the bust so as to cover the area and make sure to pin it tightly.

Marathi style
This is the typical saree draping style seen in Maharashtra and is also seen worn by actresses in some Bollywood films.

Step 1: With about 1 meter of fabric, take it and wrap it around to the left while the rest of the fabric lies on the right side, tie the borders around the waist tightly.

Step 2: Bring the pallu to the front and pin it to the left side shoulder.

Step 3: Pleat the loose fabric in about 4 inch wide pleats, try to make about 8-9 pleats. Pleats should be tucked in at the navel.

Step 4: Lastly take care of the pallu by taking it over the shoulder and placing it so that it can be tucked in on the left side at the waist.

A style worn in the southern states of India is the south Indian saree draping style.
Step 1: Take about 1 meter of the fabric, take it around the body and tie a knot in the middle of the waist.

Step 2: With a small amount of fabric, make pleats. Take the pleats between the legs and tuck one edge at the back. The rest should be taken to the left and only one last pleat can be tucked at the front.

Step 3: The fabric left should be bunched and collected at the back by taking through the legs.

Step 4: Take pallu over the left shoulder in such a way that it can be tucked in the left side of the waist. Borders on the left and right side can be of equal length, and that is your look complete

 MODERN STYLES
They are the newer more fashionable styles that have been created for fashion conscious individuals who want to stand out or try new styles.

Indo-western draping style
This is another innovative style that makes use of trendy western garments that are used in combination with the traditional saree. Here instead of using a typical blouse, you can opt for something a bit more modern like a shirt, crop top or a top with a Chinese collar. This adds a unique look to the outfit.

Here the saree is worn the same way except it will not be draped across the upper body and just the pallu can be pleated and left to lie over the shoulder. The pallu can also be made to wrap around the neck like a scarf.

Step 2: Wrap the saree around the body once and then drape it across the chest. Warp it again around the body from the back.

Step 3: Make pleats from the pallu, but remember to keep it short.

Step 4: The fabric draped across the chest can be made into pleats and pinned securely to the center of the blouse piece. The two flaps now produced give the illusion of butterfly wings.
